Renee Hobbs offers a keynote address at the winter meeting on the Bay Area Independent School Librarians (BAISL) in San Franciso on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in talk entitled, “Transforming Education Through Digital and Media Literacy.”

She will also join a panel discussion on the “Hazards and Advantages of Digitized Information in Schools,” with Mirian Gilbert of Rosen Publishing, Debbie Abilock, President of BayNet, and Daniel Hudkins, instructional technologist at the Harker School in San Jose. Nicole Hunter and Rachel Shaw facilitate the conversation.

In her talk, Hobbs explores how varying conceptualizations of the concept of digital literacy shape both instructional practices in K-12 education and day-to-day in-home media and technology use, showing how librarians can best support the needs of teachers, learners and their families. Hobbs argues that a more precise understanding of parent and teacher motivations for digital and media literacy is essential in crafting meaningful professional development programs for educators. She will be using some video clips from the forthcoming digital media project entitled Powerful Voices for Kids, which is an online professional development program in media literacy technology integration for K-6 educators.

The next Bibliotecas para la Gente meeting is Friday January 13th in San José. (BPLG) is a non-profit organization with a mission to support the efforts of professionals and paraprofessionals working in the library field who are interested in developing and providing library services for the Spanish speaking and Latino communities of Northern California.

This is a great chance to catch up with other BPLG members, meet new members and contribute to this great group. At this meeting you’ll have a chance to listen and learn from members, Adrian Barrientos, Lael Takiguchi, Dora Irene Morales, and Maynard Martinez when they present La Pasión De La Colección, the presentation they gave at the REFORMA National Conference in September. This is a great opportunity to get info on collection development for Spanish speaking and Latino library users. We’ll have a short BPLG meeting followed by the presentation, so come early and get ready for an info filled get together.

Date: Friday, January 13, 2012
Time: BPLG meeting 9:30-10:30, Presentation 10:30-11:30
Place: East San José Carnegie Branch Library
