Renee Hobbs offers a keynote address at the winter meeting on the Bay Area Independent School Librarians (BAISL) in San Franciso on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in talk entitled, “Transforming Education Through Digital and Media Literacy.”

She will also join a panel discussion on the “Hazards and Advantages of Digitized Information in Schools,” with Mirian Gilbert of Rosen Publishing, Debbie Abilock, President of BayNet, and Daniel Hudkins, instructional technologist at the Harker School in San Jose. Nicole Hunter and Rachel Shaw facilitate the conversation.

In her talk, Hobbs explores how varying conceptualizations of the concept of digital literacy shape both instructional practices in K-12 education and day-to-day in-home media and technology use, showing how librarians can best support the needs of teachers, learners and their families. Hobbs argues that a more precise understanding of parent and teacher motivations for digital and media literacy is essential in crafting meaningful professional development programs for educators. She will be using some video clips from the forthcoming digital media project entitled Powerful Voices for Kids, which is an online professional development program in media literacy technology integration for K-6 educators.

of Social Information Group

Google + is arguably the fastest-growing social networking tool out there. Not only has adoption of Google + soared, but features are also being added on an almost weekly basis. But is it useful? And if so, how? In this fast-paced session, you’ll get a crash course on Google + for finding information, as well as some best practices in using it to track companies and people of interest to you and your organization.

Our presenter for the evening will be Scott Brown, owner of Social Information Group (http://www.socialinformationgroup.com), an independent information practice that focuses on the effective use of social networking tools for sharing and finding information. He has over 20 years of experience in library and information organizations, in public, academic and corporate settings. The use of social networking has been an area of significant interest to our members, and we’re pleased to have Scott back again to discuss this hot topic.

NOCALL Spring Institute Committee is pleased to announce that Institute and hotel registration are now open. Register by Tuesday, March 8th to take advantage of the early bird rate!

The topic of this year’s Institute is Winds of Change: Where the Legal Industry is Going and How to Harness the Power of Opportunity. The legal industry is continuing to change at an alarmingly fast rate. Please join us as we discuss some of the most pressing issues affecting both the practice of law and the law library profession. The programs and speakers will provide the information and tools necessary to identify and seize opportunities, position ourselves as leaders and act as effective change agents within our organizations. There will also be ample time to visit with exhibitors and connect with your colleagues.

The 2011 Spring Institute will take place Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th at the Sir Francis Drake (www.sirfrancisdrake.com) in San Francisco. The institute will begin at 12:00 noon on Friday (4/8) and run through Saturday (4/9) at 2:30 p.m. We have also partnered with BayNet to hold a pre-Institute workshop on RDA on Friday morning for those who would like to attend. Early bird registration for the Institute is only $115 and includes a ticket to the evening cocktail reception. The morning workshop is only $20 and includes a continental breakfast. For those who are interested in staying overnight in San Francisco, the Sir Francis Drake is giving us a room price of $149 per night for the Institute. Rooms must be booked by Tuesday, March 8th and can be booked at http://tinyurl.com/nocallSI2011.

We are also pleased to be partnering with Farella Braun + Martel LLP to offer CLE credit, so please extend a registration invitation to your paralegals and attorneys.

You can register online at http://nocall2011.eventbee.com or you can download a copy of the registration form on the 2011 NOCALL Spring Institute web page at http://nocall.org/calendararchive/2011/2011SpringInstitute.html.
