In his time there, his unique position allowed him to learn more about hands-on library leadership as well as make significant contributions to the planning of the new building’s layout and operations. Bill is now the Teen Services Librarian at the newly-constructed library. He has worked for the Contra Costa County Library since 2006, after having followed a logical and linear career path from English Major to Fedex Courier to Stockbroker to Sports Writer. Since then, he has become increasingly interested and involved in library decision making on a larger scale, and he thinks that you can too.

NOCALL Spring Institute and the Pre-Institute Workshop, SF, April 8-9

Just a reminder that there is still time to register for the NOCALL Spring Institute and the Pre-Institute Workshop!  BayNet is partnering on the Pre-Institute Workshop, so as a result BayNet members can receive member pricing for the workshop and even for the full Institute, if they are interested. Here are some more details on the workshop:

Pre-Institute Workshop

What You Need To Know To Break The Code: RDA – Not Just Jargon for the Back of House

This workshop is intended to be an overview of RDA and how it will impact cataloging going forward.  RDA stands for Resource Description and Access and it is the new cataloging standard that will be replacing AACR2.  Joni Cassidy (of Cassidy Cataloging) will provide an overview of what RDA is and why it should be on the radar of those in Technical Services departments.  Ken Well (from Innovative Interfaces) will cover what library system vendors are doing to adjust to RDA and what this is likely to change system wise.  Finally, Kathleen Winzer (from the Stanford Law School Library) will close by talking about her experiences as an RDA tester.

Anyone that is in Technical Services or is a Cataloging Librarian should definitely attend the workshop.  And, at the price of only $20 for members, what a bargain!

Please take a look at the rest of the Institute program on the NOCALL web site.  Registration is open through the end of the week, so register today!

Mining Enterprise Intelligence — Another Role for Information Professionals
Librarian and information professionals have skills that can be adapted and applied in a way that may not have occurred to them: to help their organizations that are desperate to find their information assets (paper, digital, knowledge) in an information overload reality.  This can be a career opportunity for us — in the jobs we have now, in our next jobs, and as consultants.

Deb Hunt is Principal of Information Edge, which empowers clients to find the information they need to do their work. Information Edge specializes in enterprise content management, knowledge services, professional research, and library creation and automation. Deb has presented at many conferences including CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California), the Special Library Association, the California Library Association, Internet@Schools, Internet Librarian, and AIIP (the Association of Independent Information Professionals). She has written for many print and e-publications, including Information Outlook, Best Practices for Government Libraries (2009 and 2010), AIIP’s Connections, and Information World Review.

She serves on the Special Library Association (SLA) Board of Directors, is the listserv moderator for BayNet, and is a member of NCNMLG and AIIP.  One of her favorite things to do is teach students and information professional entering the information world. She does this as an instructor in the Library Technology program at Diablo Valley College and as a mentor in AIIP.
