Event: Special Libraries Association with BAYNET:

Q: HOW DO YOU MOVE AN ANT COLLECTION? A: VERY CAREFULLY.

A TOUR OF THE CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Please join us for a tour of the California Academy of Sciences in their new temporary home at 875 Howard Street, San Francisco. Librarian Anne Malley will describe the move from Golden Gate Park, give us an overview of the fascinating collections in the Naturalist Center and demonstrate the Manzanita image resources. We will then tour the Academy archives and rare book collection, including an original double elephant folio of Audubon's "Birds of America." (For a sneak preview of this remarkable book, go to http://www.audubon.org/bird/BoA/BOA_index.html and imagine the drawings full size.)

The Academy's web site (http://www.calacademy.org) explains its mission as follows: "Founded in 1853 as the first scientific institution in the West, the California Academy of Sciences' mission is to explore and explain the natural world. " Scientists from eight different research departments study animals, plants, minerals and anthropological artifacts from around the world; and the Academy presents a wide variety of classes, lectures and trips in addition to its public exhibits. The Academy is also known as the home of the Steinhart Aquarium (and yes, the aquarium and its famous penguins were part of the move!)

During the time allotted for refreshments, you'll be able to walk around the exhibit areas and see the ANTS: HIDDEN WORLDS REVEALED exhibit and the aquarium if you wish.
