Lawrence Livermore National Labs, Livermore, California: Technical Information Specialist - Job Number 001971

The Library Division of the Technical Information Department at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking an Information Specialist to perform complex scientific literature searches in the areas of chemistry, physics, and engineering using computer based information systems; research information queries using appropriate databases; and provide retrieval results in various media and formats. Additionally, the candidate will staff the reference desk; assist with collection development; help other Library staff with research and interpretation of solutions; participate as a team member to evaluate library services; and perform other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences or library science or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and education, along with experience performing complex scientific literature searches using advanced information retrieval and management techniques. Experience using scientific databases such as STN, INSPEC, ISI Web of Science, Dialog, and Chemical Abstracts Services is also essential, as is experience using bibliographic and database organization and retrieval techniques. Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as PC and Macintosh proficiency are a must. In addition, the following are preferred: A MLIS degree in Library Science or Information Science; experience searching non-scientific databases; knowledge of Laboratory, DOE, and Federal requirements for information management; understanding of MARC standards; knowledge of national and international cataloging standards; the ability build databases and web pages; and broad knowledge of technical communication, information science, library automation, and publications fields.
