There are currently two vacancies for the position of Library Assistant II, a 20 hr. per week position with the Children's Team at the Main Library and a 20 hr. per week position with Project Read, the adult literacy program of the Library. The Library Assistant II position is designed to perform a variety of customer service, technical and clerical tasks, and contribute to this high energy, flexible, creative and dynamic team environment. Spanish language skills are highly desirable for both positions.

The Children's Team position
  • Experience working with children is desirable
  • A strong interest in working with children and learning children's literature and resources is critical
  • Major direct public contact and support for public services is involved in this position
  • Helping adults and children locate appropriate library materials from the public Children's desk
  • Creating and maintaining weekly desk schedules for the team
  • Creating, distributing and maintaining flyers and other promotional materials
  • Maintaining statistical records and other clerical and office managerial tasks
  • Working flexible hours typical workweek includes morning, afternoon and evening hours as well as weekends on at least a monthly basis.
For the Project Read position,
  • Experience working with volunteers and Library Literacy programs is helpful.
  • Spanish language skills are useful.
  • Creating and maintaining database files.
  • Maintaining statistical records, files and other clerical tasks.
  • Flexible hours, periodic evening hours, and very occasional weekend hours are required.

Experience and Training
Two years or responsible technical and clerical library assistant experience comparable to that of a Library Assistant I for the City of San Mateo. Completion of the 12th grade supplemented by general clerical or Library Science courses and two years of responsible technical and clerical library assistant experience comparable to that of a Library Assistant I for the City of San Mateo.
