Description: The Operations Manager, Classification Unit, Stanford University Libraries, manages a unit of Library Specialist IIIs responsible for a production LC classification operation. Processes materials that lack call numbers. Assigns call numbers that conform to LC classification and shelflisting rules using electronic classification schedules and appropriate cutter number tables.

DUTIES:

  • Oversees the workflow and sets priorities for the Class Unit.
  • Hires, trains and supervises Library Specialist III classifiers using current classification tools.
  • Monitors production of the unit and adjusts workflow.
  • Tracks unit production and provides statistical reports to management.
  • Determines basic subject matter of materials in relevant languages.
  • Locates class number that corresponds to the main subject of the material using the Library of Congress' Classification Web and, as necessary, the RLIN and OCLC databases.
  • Applies instructions (e.g., tables, "divided like instructions") in the classification schedules to construct the class number when necessary.
  • Completes the class number by assigning appropriate cutter numbers based on instructions in the classification schedules and by using LC cutter tables and pre-established cutter numbers.
  • Shelflists against the SUL union catalog and enters call number into Unicorn.
  • Performs Level 3 brief cataloging, conforming to AACR2 rules and Library of Congress Name Authority.
  • Performs copy assisted cataloging as required.
  • May be assigned Expert Partner or other duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience supervising high level paraprofessional or technical staff in a production oriented environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent analytic skills.
  • Reading knowledge of at least one modern European language besides English required, with additional reading knowledge of Hebrew preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of cataloging functions and demonstrated experience in classification of material using the Library of Congress classification schedules and subject headings.
  • Consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using an integrated library system to attain consistent results in a production process.
  • Ability to effectively search bibliographic utilities (e.g., OCLC, RLIN).
  • Good keyboarding skills and physical tolerance for at least six hours per day of keying.
  • High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows, word processing, spreadsheets) and familiarity with other computer applications (email, internet).
