ABOUT THE LIBRARY
The Benicia Public Library is a progressive single-outlet library serving the City of Benicia, CA, population 27,200. The library has an innovative program that includes activities for all ages, an adult literacy program, and is part of the SNAP consortium. The library is open seven days a week with a staff of 22 FTE. Circulation is currently at 330,000 volumes annually. ABOUT THE CITY
Benicia, a city of 27,200 residents, lies nestled on the shore of the north San Francisco Bay, just 35 miles from San Francisco and 23 miles from the Napa Valley wine country. Benicia was named one of the top ten most playful cities in the U.S. by "Nick Jr." magazine in 2003, in part because of the excellence of the library.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Library Director, appointed by the City Manager, is a member of the City's management team. The Director supervises a staff of six full-time librarians, five full-time library assistants, a full-time Adult Literacy/ESL coordinator, and a full-time administrative assistant. In addition, there are many part-time employees and an active group of volunteers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education equivalent to MLS degree from an accredited institution AND five years of professional library experience including at least two years in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

COMPENSATION
Salary range is $7,030 to $8,545 per month

BENEFITS
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans; premiums for HMO option fully paid by City
  • Three weeks paid vacation per year
  • Sixteen days paid administrative leave per year
  • Twelve paid holidays and two paid personal leave days per year
  • City pays 7% of employee's 8% contribution to PERS; formula for retirement benefits is 2.7% at age 55
  • City contributes 7% to a deferred compensation plan if employee contributes 3%
