College of San Mateo, San mateo, California

The District

San Mateo County Community College District, one of 72 community college districts in California, is comprised of Skyline College (San Bruno), College of San Mateo (San Mateo), Cañada College (Redwood City) and the central administration building in San Mateo. In addition to its three colleges, the District also operates several community-centered training facilities in San Mateo County which provide residents with a variety of technical services.

College of San Mateo

College of San Mateo (CSM), the oldest college in the San Mateo County Community College District, is located today on a 153-acre site that provides a panoramic view of the San Francisco Bay. CSM was established in 1922 as San Mateo Junior College, the first such institution on the Peninsula, and grew steadily despite decades of temporary quarters. After 42 years in several locations - including an old home in the town's park and the former Merchant Marine barracks at Coyote Point - the College moved to its campus in the hills west of San Mateo. The College Heights campus opened in 1963. College of San Mateo currently serves approximately 11,000 day, evening and weekend students. CSM's primary service area is central San Mateo County but attracts many students from around the Bay Area. CSM offers distance learning programs that include online courses and telecourses via KCSM. CSM students reflect the diversity of the Bay Area and have a range of educational goals. CSM, therefore, offers a wealth of programs and services to meet the needs of all those preparing to transfer, those earning a certificate or A.A./A.S. degree, and those taking classes for personal enrichment.
