Berkeley, California

The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library of the Graduate Theological Union seeks a full-time (37.5 hours per week) Catalog Librarian.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform original and copy cataloging of materials in all formats; database maintenance, including resolving authority and other cataloging conflicts; create name authorities on the GTU online catalog as necessary; provide support for other cataloging staff as assigned by the Head of Cataloging; participate in interdepartmental planning and work-sharing; oversee materials processing and supervise student assistants; other duties as assigned. The Catalog Librarian reports to the Head of Cataloging.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree. At least one year of cataloging including original cataloging, using AACR2, LCSH, and LCC, preferred. Highly qualified entry level applicants will be considered. Experience using catalog utilities in a networked environment; reading knowledge of at least one European language; demonstrated oral and written communication skills; ability to pay great attention to detail; awareness of current cataloging issues.

Desired: Experience using OCLC and familiarity with INNOPAC system conventions and documentation; supervisory and training experience; additional reading knowledge of Latin, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, or any of the Asian languages; a second advanced degree in an area pertaining to religion or philosophy; knowledge of religious or theological literature.

Salary: Appointment at Assistant or Associate Librarian rank and salary commensurate with qualifications. Excellent benefits.

The Graduate Theological Union is a national and international center for graduate theological study, clergy education, and applied research and public policy formation in religion and society. The GTU community consists of approximately 130 faculty, 1300 students and 125 staff. The Library staff serves the research, teaching, and study needs of the consortium, and provides reference assistance to local religious leaders, the general public, and students from other institutions within the Bay Area. The GTU Library's book collection consists of approximately 440,000 titles, 5% of which require retrospective conversion. Approximately 5-7,000 titles are added to the collection each year. This position offers an exciting opportunity in a religious and culturally diverse environment to participate in the continuing development of the largest theological library in the western United States.
