Salary:

$4,091 - $4,948*
(A 20-hour-a-week part-time position pays a prorated salary amount equivalent to $2,067 - $2,496/month)

*The effective salary range for this position is $4,091 to $4,948. In addition to base salary, ($3,745 to $4,546), this position receives deferred compensation of 3.4% with a max. of $1,010 per year deposited to a Deferred Compensation Plan. Additionally, 8% of straight time earnings are deposited to that employee's account with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Of the 8%, the City's contribution is 7% and the employee pays the 1% balance. At the employee's option, these monies are returned as a lump sum upon separation or as an annuity if eligible for retirement. The City is not a member of Social Security but all employees hired after April 1, 1986 will pay 1.45% of earnings towards Medicare coverage. Other benefits partially described on the back of this bulletin include City's share of retirement costs, medical, dental, life insurance, vacation, and 14.5 holidays.

Job Description:

Under general supervision, a Librarian I in Youth Services performs a variety of professional and para-professional duties related to the library program. This includes: conducting reference interviews with customers to serve their information needs; guiding the public in the use of the Library's on-line public access catalog, print and non-print electronic resources, the Internet, and readers' advisory; reading and evaluating professional reviews and other resources for selection of library materials; planning, promoting, and presenting youth educational or enrichment programs; conducting class and school visits and communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. The individual chosen will work with multicultural/multiracial customers and assist in maintaining an international and multilingual collection for children. Enthusiasm, innovation, self-motivation, cultural sensitivity, and excellent public relations and interpersonal skills are a must. Candidates must be willing to share ideas, initiate positive changes and participate as a contributing member of the library team. The ability to speak a second language (Spanish, Farsi, Vietnamese, or Chinese, etc.) would be useful. The current opening is part-time (twenty hours per week) and requires working a flexible schedule including days, evenings and weekends (Saturdays and possible Sundays).

Requirements

Education:

Master's Degree in Library Science and coursework in children's literature and reference materials.

OR

Bachelor's Degree and two years professional or para-professional library experience. Para-professional experience is defined as reference work in Youth Services performed under a professional librarian.

Selection Procedure

Candidates must complete and return a City of Hayward Application and the Youth Services Librarian I Supplemental Questionnaire. Based on the information provided, a screening panel will select the most qualified candidates. Those best qualified on the basis of this review will be invited to an oral/performance examination. Candidates passing the examination will be placed on an eligible list and submitted to the Library Department for hiring consideration.
