Description: Mechanics' Institute Library - Library Assistant
Position open: Immediately
25 hours per week
Weekdays, but might include some nights and weekends.

Beginning salary: $13.25 per hour

The Mechanics' Institute Library is a general-interest membership library, located in the Financial District, downtown San Francisco. The Library is open seven days per week, including four evenings.

The Library assistant performs a variety of technical, clerical, and public service duties. Primary duties include assignments on the circulation desk, including checking out and receiving library materials, keeping accurate circulation records, registering new members, book processing, shelving and shelf-reading, data entry, and articulating library policies and procedures to library users.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge of library operations, practices and procedures in technical and public services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with staff and library users.
  • Familiarity with online circulation systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces.
  • Familiarity with Windows and other Microsoft applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately and independently, with particular attention to detail.
