The current vacancy exists in Children's & Extension Services. Future vacancies will exist only in the Library. This position offers an excellent opportunity to enter professional library work. With two years of experience a Librarian I is eligible for promotion to Librarian II.

The Richmond Public Library serves a diverse urban community with a Main Library housing over 250,000 volumes and audiovisual materials. In addition, the Library operates a bookmobile; adult and family literacy programs; a job information center; and a depository for state and federal documents.

Librarian I:

  • Answers difficult reference questions;
  • Reviews and selects books and non-print materials;
  • Organizes and conducts adult and children's programs;
  • Develops exhibits, booklists and promotional materials; attends community and professional meetings;
  • Participates in library public relations and outreach activities;
  • Assists in designing and implementing library and information services;
  • May provide functional supervision to assigned library staff;
  • May manage a branch library or bookmobile;
  • May catalog books and other materials;
  • May be placed in charge of a branch library on a substitute basis.
  • Children and Extension Librarians are expected to participate in the Association of Children's Librarians of Northern California (ACL).

Librarian II:

  • Performs the duties of a Librarian I;
  • In addition is responsible for supervising and training assigned personnel;
  • And assumes greater responsibility for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of library programs and activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Librarian I:
    • Completion of a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library School;
    • Ability to: communicate effectively orally and in writing;
    • Plan and organize work effectively;
    • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff at all levels and the public;
    • Apply principles and practices of Librarianship that result in good library service to the community;
    • And learn to use the automated catalog and other tools to assist in reference service and collection development.
  • Librarian II:
    • Completion of a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library School AND two years of professional library experience.
    • In addition to the Librarian I abilities, the Librarian II should have skill in supervising the work of one or more subordinates through planning, organizing, assigning, coordinating and reviewing the work;
    • And the ability to motivate, train, evaluate and work effectively with subordinates.
  • License:
    • A valid California Driver's License may be required for some positions.
  • Highly desirable:
    • The ability to communicate effectively in a language in addition to English (Spanish, Asian and Southeast Asian languages, or ASL preferred) and experience working with children.
