The San Francisco Law Library is currently seeking a candidate to fill the position of Cataloger (part-time). The San Francisco Law Library, a county law library, has three branches to serve the public, members of the Bar and the judiciary. It is the oldest public law library in California and houses a collection of 300,000 volumes. The library's website is www.sfgov.org/sfll. The San Francisco Law Library is currently seeking a candidate to fill the position of Cataloger (part-time)

General Position Responsibilities:

The job duties and responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Retrospective and original cataloging of legal materials, to include rare and/or unique items;
  • Descriptive cataloging, classification, and subject analysis using MARC format;
  • Locating and editing available records for materials using OCLC network;
  • Identifying and resolving bibliographic conflicts and discrepancies in database;
  • Creating/updating records relating to authority control of bibliographic entries;
  • other duties as needed.

Required Education and Competencies:

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent;
  • 2 years of recent successful cataloging experience using OCLC and an integrated online library system, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.;
  • Understanding and experience with AACR2R, MARC21 formats and Library of Congress rule interpretations, practices and standards in creating bibliographic records, including LC subject headings and classification schemes;
  • Experience with library database maintenance and authority control;
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with personal computers and standard office productivity software programs, in a networked environment;
  • Good oral/written communication skills in English;
  • Accurate data entry skills;
  • Self starter;
  • Can prioritize, organize, and be deadline-oriented;
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively;
  • Flexibility.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with legal materials.
