$2,326 - $2,827 Biweekly;
$60,476- $73,502 Annually

APPOINTMENT TYPE & SCHEDULE:

Provisional-Full-time. The provisional appointee will be required to succeed in a Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a permanent appointment to this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Chief of Children and Youth Services, the Early Literacy Specialist coordinates the library's system-wide Services that support the Early Literacy development program. The essential functions include:

  • Plans, publicizes, executes and evaluates a program of activities and events designed to encourage early literacy;
  • Provides support to system staff developing and maintaining early literacy skills;
  • Promotes and creates productive relationships with other agencies and professional organizations providing early literacy programs and resources;
  • Participates in the planning and development of system-wide services to the children of San Francisco;
  • Develops, in conjunction with the children's Materials Selection Specialist, relevant bibliographies and information pieces for parents and caregivers;
  • Represents San Francisco Public Library in the community as the Early Literacy Specialist or as requested by the Chief of Children and Youth Services;
  • Assists the Chief of Children and Youth Services with special project as requested;
  • Performs other job related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association; AND
  2. Two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian. Experience must be comparable to the duties and responsibilities of class 3630 Librarian I. AND
  3. 12 months (2040 hrs) verifiable experience performing the duties of children�s and youth Services Librarian

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • College degree in Early Childhood Literacy or Early childhood Education
  • Professional experience performing duties in an Early Literacy program or Early childhood Development program
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of children, teens and adult library users
  • An active commitment to public service
  • Willingness to participate in programming and outreach activities

WORK SCHEDULE:

The regular work schedule for this position includes weekends and evening hours; appointee must be willing to work this schedule.

Current SFPL Employees:

Current employees of the San Francisco Public Library who meet the minimum qualifications based entirely on their SFPL experience need not submit verification. City and County employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. If the qualifying experience is a combination of SFPL experience and outside experience then the outside experience must be verified. Outside experience verification must be on the employer's letterhead and must show the applicant, job title(s), duties performed, dates of service and must be signed by the employer.

EDUCATION VERIFICATION:

Applicants must submit a copy of the college coursework demonstrating possession of the minimum educational qualifications.

VERIFICATION WAIVER:

Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. Applicants must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver request may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to submit the required verification or request for waiver may result in rejection of the application.
