Salary Range Effective: 11/5/05:
$2,326 - $2,827 Biweekly;
$60,476- $73,502 Annually

APPOINTMENT TYPE & SCHEDULE:

Provisional-Full-time. The provisional appointee will be required to succeed in a Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a permanent appointment to this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision the 3632 Librarian II, Branch Manager performs advanced level librarian work in planning, directing and implementing the operations of the neighborhood branch library with an emphasis on public service. The essential functions of the position include:

  • Supervising the work activities of subordinate staff;
  • Making staff assignments;
  • Managing the training of new staff;
  • Leading staff in the use of best library practices;
  • Managing the building to ensure a safe and efficient workplace;
  • Interacting with library users on library programs and issues;
  • Providing public service to library users seeking information on library materials and resources;
  • Managing collection maintenance and development;
  • Preparing exhibits and displays;
  • Promoting community programs to draw new library users and to newly engage regular library users;
  • Fostering positive community relations through outreach to a diverse community;
  • Participating in Branch/system wide library committees and work groups to include special projects, formulation and implementation of new policies;
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association; AND
  2. Two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian. Experience must be comparable to the duties and responsibilities of class 3630 Librarian I. AND

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan, assign, direct and evaluate personnel
  • Ability to write and speak effectively to communicate complex concepts and ideas
  • Ability to develop and put into effect new procedures and policies
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Ability to promote teamwork
  • Positive and enthusiastic public service skills

WORK SCHEDULE:

The regular work schedule for this position includes weekends and evening hours; appointee must be willing to work this schedule.

Current SFPL Employees:

Current employees of the San Francisco Public Library who meet the minimum qualifications based entirely on their SFPL experience need not submit verification. City and County employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. If the qualifying experience is a combination of SFPL experience and outside experience then the outside experience must be verified. Outside experience verification must be on the employer's letterhead and must show the applicant, job title(s), duties performed, dates of service and must be signed by the employer.

EDUCATION VERIFICATION:

Applicants must submit a copy of the college coursework demonstrating possession of the minimum educational qualifications.

VERIFICATION WAIVER:

Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. Applicants must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver request may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to submit the required verification or request for waiver may result in rejection of the application.
