The San Mateo Public Library is in the forefront of innovative approaches to library services. Staff works in a team environment, uses "reengineering" methods in work processes, practices interest-based negotiation, and applies cutting-edge technology to build a library for the future. A new, state of the art "green" Main Library is under construction to be completed Summer 2006. Our Hillsdale and Marina Branch Libraries recently completed interior renovations.

THE POSITION

This exam will be used to create a list of eligible candidates for current and future Librarian I/II openings. A Librarian position can be filled at the I or II level depending on qualifications.

The current vacancy is part-time (20 hours per week); and is split between Reference Services and Technical Services at the Main Library.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide reference and reader's advisory services to diverse customers
  • Catalog, classify, and assign subject heading to library materials
  • Create original cataloging records
  • Assist the public in making use of the library facilities
  • Perform outreach to the community, local organizations, and schools within established design and framework
  • Collection development for several subject areas

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Training:

Graduation from an ALA accredited graduate school of Librarianship, with a Master's degree in Library Science.

Experience:

Librarian I Level
     Previous public library experience desirable but not required

Librarian II Level
     Two years of professional library experience comparable to that of a Librarian I in the City of San Mateo

     AND

     Knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work including:
  • collection development
  • Reference methods, techniques, and sources used in library work
  • Materials and services in public libraries
  • Standard library technology, library automation, computers, software and library procedures including circulation, cataloging, and bibliographic searching
     AND

     Ability to:
  • Work independently
  • Supervise and train subordinates
  • Operate computerized cataloging and bibliographic databases
  • Implement and enforce library and City policies and procedures
  • Work weekends and evening shifts as assigned
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

SALARY/BENEFITS

The City of San Mateo offers an excellent compensation package:

Salary:
     Librarian I: $ 3,550 - $ 4,234 per month
     Librarian II: $ 4,083 - $ 4,660 per month
     (prorated ? based on work hours)
     Plus 7% City paid Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Pool Money:
     $622.10 additional per month (prorated/work hours) to be used toward health insurance or other optional benefits.

Insurance:
     A choice of medical plans, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance.

Bilingual Differential:
     $195 per month (prorated/work hours) if applicable.

Vacation:
     11 - 25 working days annual vacation, depending on length of service.

Leaves:
     6 days per year earned; extended sick leave and family sick leave.

Holidays:
     13 paid holidays per year.

Programs:
     Credit Union, Employee Assistance Program,
     Deferred Compensation and Tuition Reimbursement.

Retirement:
     Enrollment in the Public Employees' Retirement System 2% @ 55, with 7% employee contribution City paid.

Unit:
     This classification falls within an employee bargaining unit, employees of which may elect to join and/or pay an equivalent service fee.

THE EXAMINATION PROCESS

Based upon a review of the first 100 applications, supplemental questionnaires and resumes received, a limited number of the best-qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process consisting of an oral panel interview. This examination process is tentatively scheduled for: Friday, September 24, 2004

An eligible list will be established from those who pass the examination process. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year, unless exhausted sooner. NOTE: The City of San Mateo reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the examination process.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE

Please answer the following questions and limit your answers to a total of no more than three pages.

  1. Please describe your experience classing, cataloging, and organizing library materials.
  2. Tells us about your experience providing reference and reader's advisory services to diverse communities.
  3. What experience have you had working in a team environment?
  4. How have your provided excellent customer service, please cite specific examples.
  5. Describe your experience with computers and library technology and instructing others in their use.
