| Description: | POSITION: Assistant Librarian, Cataloging and Reference Part-time, 18 hours per week Library Under the supervision of the Head of Cataloging & Acquisitions, who is also the principal cataloger/database manager, contributes to the cataloging and classification of new materials, and the revision and enhancement of records already in the catalogs. This may include treatment of non-print formats, some foreign language titles, and special collections. Actively manages the authority control of the online public access database. Participates in policy and planning decisions and provides some functional supervision of the Cataloging Assistant. Contributes regularly to the provision of reference service; may be assigned limited collection development and/or instruction. RESPONSIBILITIES: Cataloging and classification/arrangement of selected materials to be determined by education and experience. These may include a specific subject area or format, special projects such as reclassification, retrospective conversion, or, other division of workload with the principal cataloger. Manage authority control of subject headings and name headings in online catalog: review "new headings" lists on a regular basis and make corrections to catalog. Enhance subject access with additional headings and references. Contribute to the development of library-wide policies and procedures as a member of the professional staff and participates in subject-specific planning or work groups as assigned by the Department Head or Dean for Academic Resources. Assist in maintaining the catalog database by making systematic changes to it based on Library of Congress reported revisions of subject headings and by regularly reviewing the database for errors or inconsistencies. A regular schedule of reference desk service and may be assigned collection development and/or instruction/training activities depending on availability and the current priorities in the library. Assist the Department Head with other general assignments and special projects as time permits. Reports to the Head of Cataloging and Acquisitions. QUALIFICATIONS: MLS or equivalent degree from a school accredited by American Library Association; working knowledge of the RLIN cataloging system, national cataloging rules, Library of Congress subject heading and authority practice; knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification preferred. Demonstrated personal computer skills, familiarity with online resources for cataloging and reference, and experience with the use of Internet. Experience in an academic library is highly desirable.
