Archivist (Part Time temporary), Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA

Department: University Library http://www.ggu.edu/university_library.

Class: Part-time, Temporary (150 hours or June 30, 2006)

Position Type: 20 hours per week.

Salary: $20 per hour.

Deadline: Open until filled

Basic Function and Scope of the Job:

The University Library has a body of official university correspondence, publications, memorabilia, copies of dissertations and miscellaneous other materials. These materials have never before had proper storage, preservation or archiving documentation. The part-time archivist will create a plan for the development of archival practices and a plan for the disposition, storage and arrangement of the archival materials.

Works under the supervision of the Electronic Resources Librarian. The duration of employment will be 150 hours or June 30, 2006, whichever comes first.

Goals/Essential Functions:

  • Create a written plan for the arrangement of archival materials and the development of archival practices for the library.
  • Create written step-by-step documentation of the tasks needed to add to and to maintain the archive.
  • Create samples of finding aids, on-line bibliographic records and/or web pages for the use of researchers, as approved by the Head of Technical Services and the Library Director.
  • Train library staff to utilize current standard archival practices and procedures.
  • Assist with the selection of containers and other specialized materials or tools needed to maintain an archive according to current standard practices.
  • De-accession duplicate or unnecessary materials in consultation with collection development librarians.
  • After completion of the above goals the archivist will utilize the remaining hours implementing the plan and archiving materials, with participation of other library satff.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Good computer skills and familiarity with technological aspects of archive management.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of course-work in arranging and describing archives at an ALA accredited Library School.
