Information Technology/Technical Support
Full time with benefits
Salary range: $45,000-$48,000

The Mechanics’ Institute Library utilizes hardware and software from Innovative Interfaces integrated online library system, Millenium; operates a networked windows server/client-based environment, with approximately 25 staff computers and 14 public access computers, along with dedicated and networked printers and scanners; offers wired and wireless access Internet access through a DSL line.

Duties: (Under the general supervision of the Library Director)

  • Troubleshoots and maintains all Institute computer hardware, including staff and public computers, servers, routers, hubs, modems;
  • Troubleshoots and maintains computer peripherals, such as networked and dedicated printers and scanners; in addition to audiovisual equipment, such as projectors and sound system used for programs;
  • Troubleshoots and maintains the Institute’s phone system, fax machines, and the door security system;
  • Works with the Library staff to maintain and upgrade to new releases Innovative’s Millenium software and the Library’s third-party authentication software;
  • Evaluates, orders, and installs new software and software upgrades and provides instruction for staff on new products;
  • Upgrades Microsoft Office products and trains and supports staff in their use;
  • Acts as liaison between the Institute and automation and equipment vendors, Internet service providers, and Innovative Interfaces;
  • Schedules and provides preventive maintenance for all computer hardware and upgrades computer software as necessary;
  • Maintains data backup systems;
  • Acts as system administrator for Millenium;
  • Maintains and troubleshoots network connectivity problems and Internet communication functions, such as web access and email functions;
  • Monitors developments in the computer and library technology fields and makes recommendations for long-range technology planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or higher in computer science (or comparable experience)
  • Knowledge of networking and LAN/WAN security systems
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with various Microsoft Operating Systems and Office applications, and Veritas Backup Exec.
  • Microsoft Windows Server
  • Willingness to support and work collegially with employees at all levels of technical expertise; willingness to provide timely feedback on problems and projects

Desirable Qualifications:

  • General understanding of library principles, organization and objectives
  • Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Millenium system or equivalent
