SALARY: $38,802- $54,486 : $18.65- $26.19 hourly

THE POSITION: Solano County Library is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic Librarian to share the Library?s commitment to providing the best in services for the community. The eligible list established will be used to fill Librarian vacancies in all units of the Library, such as Technical Services and Public Services (Children's and Adult's), as they occur. Depending on the applicant qualifications, the County may hire at the entry or journey level. Responsibilities include readers' advisory, collection development, assisting with research projects, reference questions, outreach and programming activities.

This could also be used as an Extra Help position. An employee appointed to an extra help must meet all the requirements of the corresponding regular position. An extra help employee is a person who is employed for the purpose of relieving or augmenting regular staff in the accomplishment of work. Extra Help employees cannot work more than 999 hours in a fiscal year. Extra help employees are excluded from civil service and shall not have the rights to regular or continued employment.

THE LIBRARY: Solano County Library is a progressive and innovative library with secure funding and widespread community support. In 1998, a sales tax dedicated exclusively to libraries was passed with over a two-thirds majority. Despite downturns in the economy of the nation and the state, Solano County Library has maintained hours and increased expenditures for books and other library materials.

The Library is a leader in harnessing technology to improve service. The Solano County Library is in the midst of a twenty-year plan to build seven new libraries and renovate and expand six others into state-of-the-art facilities. Renovation of the Library administrative offices and a large branch were completed in 2003. Three other library building projects are on track to finish by 2006.

THE COMMUNITY: Located in a lovely rural and suburban area near San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, the Napa Valley, the state capitol and a number of top-tier academic institutions, Solano County is an ethnically diverse community in a unique location.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Entry-No experience required.
  • Journey-One year of professional library experience required.

All candidates must submit a copy of their college degree (verifying the degree, date earned and it must clearly show area of specialization) or transcripts (verifying the courses and units completed). Failure to submit your degree or transcripts within 5 days from the final filing date will disqualify you from the recruitment. Candidates who attended a college or university that is accredited by a foreign or non-U.S. accrediting agency must have their educational units evaluated by an educational evaluation service. The result must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than the close of the recruitment. Please contact your local college or university to learn where you can obtain this service.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to obtain a California Class C driver's license is required. Independent travel is required.

TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Researches and answers reference questions either directly or via telephone or computer; suggests titles of interest in subject areas indicated by patrons; instructs and assists in use of reference and general library resources; compiles bibliographies and webliographies as requested.

  • Maintains library collections of books, documents, audiovisual and other materials; selects materials for addition to the collection in assigned fields or subjects and weeds the materials collection; catalogs and classifies materials as needed.

  • Plans and conducts programs for children or adults to encourage use of library materials; conducts class visits and maintains relationship with schools; may carry out special projects involving library promotion and outreach activity; may assist in facility maintenance.

  • Performs various administrative tasks in support of the daily operations of the branch; prepares monthly, annual, or special reports; maintains statistics; writes book reviews and other library service related correspondence; attends meetings and workshops.

  • Participates in various public relations activities; develops, coordinates, prepares and creates a variety of displays; assembles and maintains displays, bulletin boards, and other visual aides in assigned areas; writes newspaper articles and press releases to promote library services.

  • Perform acquisitions tasks to acquire new materials for the collection; manages funds associated with materials acquisition; monitors and adjusts workflow of the acquisition unit; assists in forming policy for technical services and acquisitions; merges, organizes and edits data on online ordering systems; trains and oversees assigned staff.

  • Prepares monthly, annual, or special reports as requested; maintains related statistics; writes book reviews and other library service related correspondence; may assist in the development and implementation of changes in operational policy and procedure; may write proposals and grant requests for special library needs; attends various meetings; assists in ensuring facilities are properly maintained.
