The current opening is for a fulltime (37.5 hours per week) position with the Information Services Team at the Main Library. This position will have emphasis on the life sciences for support of the Genentech Foundation Biotechnology Learning Center along with all of the general responsibilities of an adult reference librarian.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory services to diverse customers.
- Assist the public in making use of the library facilities.
- Develop and implement library programs for the public including programs to support the Genentech Foundation Biotechnology Learning Center.
- Perform outreach to the community, local organizations and schools within established design and framework.
- Collection development for several subject areas, including the life sciences.

Experience and Education Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Two years of professional library experience comparable to that of a Librarian I in the City of San Mateo.
- Experience as a science librarian desired.
Training & Education:
- Graduation from an ALA accredited graduate school of Librarianship with a Master’s degree in Library Science.
- Undergraduate degree or above in the physical or life sciences desired.
- Spanish or Chinese language skills also desired.
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of professional library work including collection development.
- Standard library technology, library automation, computers, software and library procedures including circulation, cataloging, and bibliographic searching.
- Reference methods, techniques, and sources used in library work.
- Materials and services in public libraries.
- Scientific library resources is highly desirable.
Ability to:
- Work independently.
- Supervise and train subordinates.
- Operate computerized cataloging and bibliographic databases.
- Work weekend and evening shifts as assigned.
- Develop, implement, and monitor training programs.
- Implement and enforce library and City policies and procedures.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Apply knowledge of the life sciences to develop programs and services for a diverse customer base.
ADA Special Requirement:
Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to work in a standard library environment; ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, lift 40 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds.
