Network Technician
San Mateo Public Library us now accepting applications for a Network
Technician. The final filing date is May 5, 2006 or until the first 100
applications are received.
The Position:
- The Network Technician will serve as the lead technology specialist for the
library department overseeing the library's network of approximately 200
staff and public use computers.
- Working with the library's Automation Team,
the Network Technician will be involved with the planning and
implementation of new computer services and technological changes.
- The
Network Technician supervises part-time staff and volunteers.
- The Network
Technician is a limited duration position currently funded only for two
years.
- The Library hopes to allocate permanent funding for this position in
the next budget cycle.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Coordinate the library's computer systems with the City's local and wide area networks and the Peninsula Library Automation Network (PLAN) to ensure hardware/software compatibility and compliance with policies, goals and objectives.
- Conduct formal and informal training programs on the use and operation of network systems hardware and software.
- Serve as a resource for library staff and public users, providing answers and assistance with technical and non-routine questions and problems with hardware, software, and peripheral equipment.
- Evaluate and analyze the library's network information needs and requirements; develop and recommend application and resource priorities.
- Maintain current awareness of all new technological procedures, processes and equipment.
The Qualifications
Experience and Education Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Two years of responsible computer local and/or wide area network management and administration.
Training & Education:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.
- Additional years of
experience may be substituted on a year by year basis for education.
