THE COLLEGE:
Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts is the largest regionally accredited, independent school of art and design in the western United States. Noted for the interdisciplinary nature and breadth of its programs, the college offers studies in eighteen majors in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing. The college confers the bachelor of architecture, bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, master of architecture, master of arts, and master of fine arts degrees. With campuses in San Francisco and Oakland, California College of the Arts currently enrolls 1,660 full-time students.
 
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Access Services Assistant provides physical and intellectual access to the library collections at the San Francisco campus that houses the school's architecture, design and graduate collections. Duties include managing the periodical collection, processing library acquisitions, performing circulation and stack duties, and assisting patrons with use of library tools and services. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
 
REPORTS TO:  Librarian in-charge of Simpson Library

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
 
Serials Management
- Check-in and claiming of periodicals using Innovative Interfaces Millennium Serials module
- Prepares periodicals for circulation
- Resolves problems with the periodical publishers and the subscriptions vendor
- Works with the Acquisitions Associate to reconcile payments and credits
- Works with Meyer Library serials assistant to coordinate collection management
- Prepares and processes bindery orders
- Reviews periodical holdings for gaps and acquires missing issues when available
- Assists with electronic resource management of serial publications
 
Materials Processing
- Prepares library materials for use, including creation of spine labels, stamping, security stripping, etc.
- Trains and supervises students assistants who perform materials processing
- Prepares materials for withdrawal from collections, including record update and maintaining file of withdrawal history
- Prepares bindery orders and performs basic repairs to library materials
- Maintains new book shelf
- Coordinates production and processing of public lectures series recordings by ordering and distributing blank media, tracking production progress, and obtaining copies for the library and archives
 
Access Services
- Assists patrons with checkout and return of library materials
- Conveys accurate circulation policies and procedures to patrons; helps patrons locate information and resources
- Assists with overdue and billing process, and is responsible for fines accounting
- Gathers and compiles access-related statistics
- Responsible for stack maintenance; trains and supervises student shelvers
- Assists patrons with use of equipment in the library; troubleshoots and arranges for maintenance
- Closes the library and prepares the library for the next working day
- Responsible for overseeing general library operations when on duty during evening and weekend hours
 
Performs other library duties as assigned; may work on special projects as indicated by skills and interests.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous work experience in a library; demonstrated ability to use the complex features of an integrated library automation system; and familiarity with bibliographic record structures. Availability for work during evenings and weekends is required; flexibility in work schedule highly desirable. Good data entry skills and manual dexterity for working with library and archival materials. Good communication skills and disposition suitable for public service. Ability to work independently, to follow set procedures and guidelines, to extrapolate from example, and to identify inconsistencies in detailed information files. Ability to lift and move heavy volumes and boxes. Arts background desirable but not required.  Availability for work during evenings (until 8pm) and weekends is required; flexibility in work schedule highly desirable.
 
SALARY: $15-16.50 per hour depending on skills and experience; includes a comprehensive benefits package.
