The Position: Harrison Memorial Library is looking for one full time Librarian II – Head of Reference to fill a current vacancy.

SALARY: $48,840 - $59,653 (DOQ)

DUTIES will include:

  • Directing staff and supervising all functions the assigned areas, including reference, serials acquisitions and Interlibrary Loan.
  • Training new library staff on all library databases and online catalog.
  • Assisting library patrons in response to reference and related library questions.
  • Making budget recommendations and administering the approved budget of the department.
  • Operating the computerized catalog, bibliographical and circulation systems, and assisting patrons in the use of the library’s computer workstations, online databases and the Internet.
Education and Experience:
  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills and ability to work well with the public.
  • Experience with automated library systems and digital formats. Strong computer skills in a networked environment.

The Community:

Carmel-by-the-Sea is rich in natural beauty and prides itself on its white sand beach, luxuriant landscaped bluffs, verdant urban forest, natural parklands and roadside greenbelts and its dedication to the arts. First incorporated as a City in 1916, the community was founded by artists and writers – among them Jack London, George Sterling, Mary Austin and Robinson Jeffers. The City is one square mile in area with a population of approximately 4,050.

The Library:

Harrison Memorial Library’s special significance to the Carmel community is demonstrated by the financial support it receives from the general public through the Carmel Public Library Foundation. All books, supplies, equipment, and programs for the library are purchased with funds from this foundation. The City of Carmel provides funding for staff and facilities maintenance.

Library service to the Carmel community is delivered from two buildings. The main Library, Harrison Memorial Library, located on Carmel’s main street offers adult services. Youth services are located three blocks away at Park Branch. The Harrison Memorial Library has 9000 cardholders and annually circulates approximately 69,000 items to adult users, and 31,000 items from the youth services collection.
