THE POSITION

 

Under general supervision, performs readers advisory and reference work; performs professional library work in the selection and cataloging of books and materials; assists in the planning, development and implementation of library programs and the operation of library facilities; is responsible for the development and maintenance of assigned area of library materials collection and does related work as required.  The library currently has 2 vacant positions.  One position will be responsible for providing library services to teens The teen librarian position is 37.5 hours per week, and the second vacancy is for a branch librarian at 30 hours per week.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Librarian I:  answers difficult reference questions; reviews and selects books and non-print materials; organizes and conducts adult, teens, and children’s programs; develops exhibits, booklists and promotional materials; attends community and professional meetings; participates in library public relations and outreach activities; assists in designing and implementing library and information services; may provide functional supervision to assigned library staff; may manage a branch library or bookmobile; may catalog books and other materials; and may be placed in charge of a branch library on a substitute basis.  Children and Extension Librarians are expected to participate in the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California (ACL).

 

Librarian II:  performs the duties of a Librarian I; is responsible for supervising and training assigned personnel; and assumes greater responsibility for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of library programs and activities.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Experience:

 

Librarian I:  Completion of a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library School.

                                                                                   

Librarian II:  Completion of a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library School AND two (2) years of professional library experience. 

                                                                                                                                                

Ability to:  communicate effectively orally and in writing; plan and organize work effectively; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff at all levels and the public; apply principles and practices of librarianship that results in good library service to the community; learn to use the automated catalog and other tools to assist in reference service and collection development.  In addition to the above, the Librarian II should have the ability to motivate, train, evaluate and work effectively with subordinates.                

 

Skills in (Librarian II): Supervising the work of one or more subordinates through planning, organizing, assigning, coordinating and reviewing their work.  

                                                                                                                                               

License:  A valid California Driver’s License may be required for some positions.

 

Highly desirable: The ability to communicate effectively in a language in addition to English (Spanish, Asian and Southeast Asian languages, or ASL preferred) and experience working with children and/or  teens.
