Water Resources Center Archives
University of California, Berkeley
[Associate Librarian I – Associate Librarian III
/ $44,736 - $51,216 per annum, depending upon qualifications]
The Water Resources Center Archives (WRCA) is the
premier library of its kind in the United States.
Founded in 1957, WRCA collects and provides
access to contemporary and historical information
on all aspects of water resources development in
California and the West, along with a number of
national and international materials. WRCA
collections include over 140,000 cataloged items,
130 manuscript collections, 60,000 photographs
(black & white and aerial), maps, videos and
legal material. The Library serves a diverse
clientele of UC faculty, students and staff, and
the general public. The library is located on the
University of California, Berkeley campus and is
part of the Division of Agriculture & Natural
Resources, a University of California system-wide
unit. Additional information about the Archives
is available at: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/WRCA/.
The Water Resources Center Archives staff
currently consists of 4 FTE, 2 librarians and 2
library assistants. WRCA operations include
acquisition of new materials and manuscript
collections, cataloging (original and copy),
processing manuscript and pictorial collections,
providing research assistance, managing the Web
site, and performing outreach and fundraising
activities. WRCA is responsible for acquiring,
preserving, and providing access to its
collections of printed materials, manuscripts,
photographs, and other materials in a variety of
formats. WRCA follows national cataloging
standards. Original cataloging and authority work
is done online in OCLC. Bibliographic records are
loaded into the OCLC system and into Melvyl, the
University of California’s online catalog for its nine campuses.
Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Director of
the Water Resources Center Archives, the
Cataloger is responsible for original cataloging
of monographs, serials, manuscript materials, and
other formats as needed. Original cataloging is
governed by the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules
(2nd edition, 2002 revision) as interpreted by
the Library of Congress and assigned subject
access utilizing LC Subject Headings. Records are
given full MARC tagging. The Cataloger will
utilize an in-house classification scheme,
developed by WRCA, and will consult print and
on-line cataloging resources as needed. When
necessary, the Cataloger will upgrade incomplete
records, adding subject headings and other data
as necessary, and work on resolving catalog
maintenance problems related to serials and old
UTLAS records. The Cataloger will record
statistics and meet regularly with the Technical
Services Librarian and the Library Assistant to
review cataloging priorities, questions, and procedures.
The Cataloger will be primarily responsible for
cataloging materials that will be part of the
Dennis Underwood Colorado River Collection. As
time permits, the Cataloger may work on materials
to add to WRCA’s general collection. Grant
funding has been secured and the position is
funded for one year. Depending on funding
