Appointment Type: Provisional. Provisional incumbents will be required to pass a Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.
Schedule: One (1) full-time (40 hours per week) positions. May be required to work nights and/or weekends.
Locations: New Mission Campus - 1125 Valencia Street.
Position Description: Under general supervision of the Dean of Library and Learning Resources or designee the Library Technical Assistant II performs a variety of supervisory, managerial, technical and clerical duties. The essential functions include supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff; assisting patrons in the use of library services and collections; explaining library policies and resolving borrower problems and complaints; communication and coordination with other library departments and sites to facilitate student, staff, and community use of the library.
Examples of Duties:
Supervises daily duties of Library Technical Assistants I (3616); maintains weekly time logs for payroll; oversight of hiring, training, supervision and payroll for student assistants within the budgetary allotment for the department.
Supervises the circulation of library material within library regulations; maintains financial records of monies collected for library fines, fees, lost book charges, collection of bad checks, etc.; works closely with Library Automation Department in the setting and implementation of the library circulation system (III Millennium) to conform to the school calendar and policies; keeps statistics relevant to department and library needs.
Catalog, process and enter into Millennium books that are to be used in the Learning Resources Center; assist students and faculty in the location of library materials, and give directional and procedural information to Learning Resources users; write, compile, and produce portions of student and faculty guides and handbooks which relate to library services.
Process orders and arrange for circulation for print and non-print materials and maintain records; develop preliminary annual budgets for books, materials, supplies, equipment for print, computer, and audio-visual components of the Learning Resource Center; order and maintain supply inventories.
Develop acceptance and management procedures for arriving periodicals; claim undeceived issues; and maintain title and subject lists of holdings.
Keeps abreast of updates in the III Millennium system and ensures that staff learns all necessary procedures.
Instruct faculty, students and staff in the use and operation of multi-media equipment; explain and interpret policy and procedures relating to media services.
Select and order equipment, materials, and supplies for the Library, Audio-Visual, and computer in consultation with proper staff.
Responsible for opening and closing of the library, ensuring that signage of building closure is correct and up-to-date; communicating with building manager about safety and security measures.
Participates in overall workings of the Library/LRC by taking an active part in committees for the Library and the District.
Instructs students, staff, and community borrowers in the use of photocopiers and printers; operates fax machine.
Handles borrower questions, problems, and complaints regarding circulation services, photocopy and print services, and Library security.
Explain and interpret copyright restrictions and handle correspondence with publishers regarding royalties and permission of duplicating copyrighted materials, in consultation with the Dean, Library & Learning Resources Center.
Assists library faculty with bibliographic instruction workshops.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Training:
Requires successful completion of two years of college with a certificate in Library Technology; AND
Two years of clerical and/or technical experience in a library.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
General knowledge of library operations, practices and procedures in technical services, including basic knowledge of copy cataloging.
Experience in public service areas of post-secondary educational institution, including Course Reserves.
Knowledge and experience with library automation systems; III Innopac of Millennium products desired.
Excellent computer skills such as working knowledge of MS Office.
Patient, enthusiastic, diligent, detail-oriented, flexible and must possess the initiative and willingness to learn.
Must be a team player and possess good people skills.
Must possess good office management skills.
Bilingual preferred: English and Spanish or English and Mandarin or Cantonese
