3618 LIBRARY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT II

Salary:  $2015.20 – $2428.00 Bi-weekly   $52,395.00 - $63,128.00 annually                         Date Issued: 8/2/2007


Appointment Type:  Provisional.    Provisional incumbents will be required to pass a Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.

Schedule:  One (1) full-time (40 hours per week) positions.  May be required to work nights and/or weekends.

Locations:  Rosenberg Library Circulation Department – Ocean Campus, 50 Phelan Avenue.               

Position Description:  Under general supervision of the Dean of Library and Learning Resources or designee the Library Technical Assistant II performs a variety of supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff; assisting patrons in the use of library services and collections; explaining library policies and resolving borrower problems and complaints; circulation desk duties; supervision of Course Reserve collection; communication and coordination with other library departments and sites to facilitate student, staff, and community use of the library.

Examples of Duties:
Supervises and manages the Circulation Department staff; schedules and supervises daily duties of Library Technical Assistants I (3616); maintains weekly time logs for payroll; oversight of hiring, training, supervision and payroll for student assistants within the budgetary allotment for the department.
Supervises the circulation of library material within library regulations; maintains financial records of monies collected for library fines, fees, lost book charges, collection of bad checks, etc. ; works closely with Library Automation Department in the setting and implementation of the library circulation system (III Millennium) to conform to the school calendar and policies; places and removes library holds on student records in the administrative BANNER system; keeps statistics relevant to department and library needs.
Supervise and maintains the Course Reserve collection; communicates with instructors regarding materials on Reserve, enters materials in III Millennium system for student use, keeps statistics on the use of this collection, and coordinates with librarians on placing library materials in Reserve area.
Supervises work experience students from Library technology program in public service and technical services as related to circulation and Course Reserves.
Keeps abreast of updates in the III Millennium system and ensures that staff learns all necessary procedures and act as the Master trainer as necessary.
Oversight of workflow of Library Technical Assistant I (3616) staff including, but not limited to: COTOP collection process, maintenance of supplies for Circulation Department and public service area; student work scheduling and supervision; statistics; mending; notice preparation and mailing; departmental financial records for lost/paid items, fines collected, bad check reporting, refunds, etc; Lost & Found; inter-campus loans; and maintenance of the Course Reserves collection.
Responsible for opening and closing of the library, ensuring that signage of building closure is correct and up-to-date; communicating with building manager about safety and security measures.
Participates in overall workings of the Library/LRC by taking an active part in committees for the Library and the District.
Instructs students, staff, and community borrowers in the use of photocopiers and printers; operates fax machine.
Handles borrower questions, problems and complaints regarding circulation services, photocopy and print services, and building security.
Supervises timely re-shelving of library materials and maintenance of stacks in the circulating areas.
Assists library faculty with bibliographic instruction workshops.
Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Training:
Requires successful completion of two years of college with  a certificate in Library Technology;  AND
Two years of clerical and/or technical experience in a library.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
General knowledge of library operations, practices and procedures in technical services, including basic knowledge of copy cataloging.
Experience in public service areas of post-secondary educational institution, including Course Reserves.
Knowledge and experience with library automation systems; II Innopac of Millennium products desired.
Excellent computer skills such as working knowledge of MS Office.
Patient enthusiastic, diligent, detail-oriented, flexible and must possess the imitative and willingness to learn.
Must be a team player and possess good people skills.
Must possess good office management skills.
