Introduction:

Position Summary:

Perform original and copy cataloging of materials in all formats; perform original and copy cataloging of the library’s rare books; database maintenance, including resolving authority and other cataloging conflicts; create local and standard authorities on the GTU online catalog as necessary; provide support for other cataloging staff as assigned by the Head of Cataloging; participate in interdepartmental planning and work-sharing; oversee materials processing and supervise student assistants; other duties as assigned. The Catalog Librarian reports to the Head of Cataloging

 

Minimum qualifications:

ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree; a second advanced degree pertaining to religion or theology is highly desirable.  At least two years of cataloging experience, including original cataloging using AACR2, LCSH, LCC, OCLC and MARC; experience using cataloging utilities in a networked environment; demonstrated oral and written communication skills; ability to pay attention to detail; awareness of current cataloging issues.  Highly qualified entry level applicants will be considered.

 

Desired: Familiarity with INNOPAC system conventions and documentation; familiarity with OCLC Connexion; supervisory and training experience; additional reading knowledge of Latin, Hebrew, Ancient Greek, or any of the Asian languages; knowledge of religious or theological literature; experience with Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books) [DCRMB] and RBMS Thesauri; commitment to theological education.

The Graduate Theological Union is a center for graduate theological study, clergy education, and applied research and public policy formation in religion and society. The GTU community consists of approximately 130 faculty, 1300 students and 125 staff. The Library staff serves the research, teaching, and study needs of the consortium, and provides reference assistance to local religious leaders, the general public, and students from other institutions within the Bay Area.  This position offers an exciting opportunity to participate in the continuing development of the largest theological library in the western United States.
