REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
Full-Time, Exempt

Reports To: the Associate Library Director

Description

Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college
for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Located on 135
lush acres in the foothills of Oakland, California, the College enrolls
approximately 900 undergraduate women and 500 graduate women and men.
Mills is consistently ranked one of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in
the nation by U.S. News & World Report, which also recognizes the
College as one of the top 20 most diverse liberal arts institutions in
the country.

The College is recruiting for a Reference Librarian.

Representative Duties

Under the general direction of the Associate Library Director, this
position provides a full range of reference and instructional services
including staffing the Reference Desk, email reference, teaching
classes, and assisting with circulation. Works one evening per week, and
3-4 Sundays per semester. Participates in collection development for
several academic departments. Assists with the writing and design of
library handouts and Web pages.

The Reference Librarian’s primary responsibilities include the following:

• Provide a full range of reference services in person, by email,and
through instructional sessions. Staff reference desk approximately 15
hours per week. Work one evening per week and several Sunday shifts per
semester.
• Provide orientations, tours, lectures, and web-based instruction for
the College community.
• Participate in developing the library’s book and electronic
collections by selecting materials for acquisition in a variety of formats.
• Work with faculty to develop library resources and instructional
sessions in general and specific subject areas to be determined.
• Design and revise informational and instructional materials in various
media formats to enhance instructional efforts.
• Assist with coordination of library surveys.
• Teach research skills sessions in specialized subject areas and
general areas.
• Supervise evening and weekend monitor staff.
• Perform related duties as needed.


Minimum Requirements

• Master’s degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or
equivalent.
• Reference experience using databases, online catalogs, the Internet,
and print resources.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Supervisory experience
• Instructional experience, including effective teaching skills in group
and individual settings.
• Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
• Enthusiasm and commitment to library public services.
• Working knowledge of hardware and software used in libraries,
particularly Innovative Interfaces.
• Ability to work cooperatively with others and maintain effective
customer service toward all persons contacted during the course of job
performance.
• Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships
within a diverse multicultural environment
• Ability to work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness
Prevention Plan.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2-3 years of increasingly responsible reference/public service
experience, preferably in an academic library.
• Formal teaching experience, including curriculum planning, lessons
plans, and related duties.
• Experience with library circulation procedures including course
reserves and electronic reserve activities.


SALARY: $40,000-$43,000 per year plus an excellent benefits package
including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b retirement plan,
22 days vacation plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff
also receives free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness
center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an
