Information Services Librarian – Medical Student Liaison, Stanford, CA

 

Stanford University’s Lane Library and Knowledge Management Center (http://lane.stanford.edu) creates opportunities for discovery, translation, learning and collaboration by providing faculty, staff, and students with easy, efficient access to in-context knowledge whenever and wherever it is needed to support patient care, education and research. The KMC focuses on acquisition and integration of knowledge sources, consultation and instruction in information finding and manipulation, learning spaces and computing labs, and technology support for the curriculum.

 

Reporting to the Associate Director for Research & Instruction, the primary focus of the Information Services Librarian – Medical Student Liaison is to teach the library's academic, clinical, and consumer communities on effective and productive use of available information resources and tools. This position will design, deliver, promote, and evaluate information literacy programs within the School of Medicine, focusing on the MD curriculum, and provide customized consultation services in person, by telephone or electronically.  The Information Services Librarian – Medical Student Liaison directly supports the MD curriculum by performing literature searches and providing advanced research assistance to SUMC students, faculty, and staff.  

 

The Information Services Librarian – Medical Student Liaison consults with appropriate subject specialists, actively reviews technology and medical information resources and recommends information resources in all media to support the SoM curriculum and other assigned liaison areas. S/he participates in the Lane Liaison program by providing advanced research assistance including bibliographic instruction and consultation in subject expertise for members of the SUMC faculty, staff and students in the assigned subject/departmental areas.  The Information Services Librarian  – Medical Student Liaison develops content for the LaneConnex website including online tutorials that support the curriculum as well as content for other assigned liaison areas.

 

Responsibilities:

 

·         Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate the library & information management curriculum. Apply instructional design skills to develop online training, in-person training and printed materials in areas of subject expertise, e.g. database design, information navigation, Evidence-Based Medicine, and Practice of Medicine library curriculum.

 

·         Identifies and coordinates web projects that integrate digital content resources with online health information literacy training modules and portals.  Manages projects to ensure timely development and implementation within the MD curriculum, LaneConnex website, and related curriculum support technologies such as CWP.

 

·         Provide end-user training. Participate in Lane’s Instructional and Liaison programs by developing and offering web-based training tools or tutorials and in-person classes and workshops. Consult with other SUMC departments, divisions, and Institutes of Medicine to serve as their Library Liaison.  The Library Liaison serves as an advocate for assigned departments and provides specialized workshops, orientations, and in depth consultation.

 

·         Provide reference and research services.  Answer reference questions as part of the Lane Service Desk team.  Conduct literature searches and research to answer reference questions.

 

·         Conduct needs assessment of information literacy requirements.  Develop new consultation and web-based services based on user assessment.

 

Qualifications:

-          Knowledge of the concepts of information organization, storage, retrieval and transfer, including the application of computer, instructional, and other information management technologies

-          Knowledge of HTML, graphics software, web publishing, and educational development software

-          Demonstrated experience in developing and providing both on-site and Web-based training

-          Advanced bibliographic expertise in searching and managing information

-          Solid understanding of technology integration in instruction, adult learning models, and educational pedagogy

-          Knowledge of the medical curriculum including pre-clinical and clinical components

-          Demonstrated ability to effectively teach adults while using a variety of educational technologies

-          Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people verbally and in writing. Excellent customer service skills are required.

 

Minimum requirement: ALA-accredited Masters degree in Library Science or

Masters degree in Education, with five or more years of library or teaching

experience.
