Exploratorium Learning Commons Summer Intern

8 Weeks, during Summer 2008
HOURS: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Monday–Friday (6/23-7/18, 7/28-8/8)
$2200 stipend

This position is for a library professional or library school student to assist the Exploratorium's Learning Commons staff, helping middle and high school math and science teachers who are attending a professional development course similar to a science boot camp. The intern would help teachers navigate the OPAC, answer reference queries and otherwise help them find what they need, along with shelving, circulation and other duties as required.

The intern would work alongside two librarians. The ideal candidate would be:

  • a library school student on the school librarian track, or
  • a teacher who's getting a school librarian/ media specialist certification, or
  • a school librarian who wants experience working with science and math reference

This is an excellent opportunity to get real-world experience in how teachers think, what they need from their libraries, and how to make yourself indispensable to your school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a school librarian, graduation or enrollment in an MLIS or library paraprofessional program
  • Strong reference skills
  • Moderate tech skills and experience with Microsoft Office
  • Patience, humor, and a strong service orientation
  • Science background is helpful, as is familiarity with the LC system, but curiosity and willingness to learn are paramount
