Learning Commons Department

Regular, Full-Time Position

The Exploratorium is a not-for-profit museum dedicated to the public understanding of science, art, and human perception.  It has pioneered the role of museums as active teaching centers with original programming based on an interactive approach to learning.  It serves as an interdisciplinary resource for schools, universities, scientists, and artists, as well as for the public.

SUMMARY
The Library Assistant will support the operations of the Learning Commons, a facility that provides educational and informational requests from its patrons by providing a wide variety of electronic, multimedia, and print-based learning resources. The Library Assistant reports to the Associate Director of Extended Learning. The Learning Commons is open to members of Exploratorium teacher professional development programs, Exploratorium staff and other affiliated audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform circulation desk and simple reference duties
  • Maintain Learning Commons facilities and storage spaces, including shelving books and other resources and straightening desks and work areas
  • Perform copy cataloging and processing of Learning Commons materials
  • Provide backup reference and circulation staffing of Learning Commons
  • Participate with other Learning Commons staff in collection development
  • Additional duties as assigne

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program in Library and Information Technology or equivalent experience.  Certificate preferred.
  • Experience with circulation and reference in a library.
  • Experience with copy cataloguing.  Familiarity with OCLC is a plus.
  • Experience with MS Word and Excel and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • English proficiency required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and positive customer service attitude.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy.
  • Willingness to be flexible in variety of circumstances.
  • Perform duties in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
