John F. Kennedy University is a private institution offering degree and certificate programs in the fields of liberal arts, management, psychology, holistic studies and law. The University Library System is comprised of a main library (Fisher) and two branch libraries.</p>
<p>The requirements of this position include at least 2 years of college or a library technician certificate. Familiarity with Windows software, accurate typing (50 wpm minimum), legible handwriting, organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail are also essential. Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces/Millennium or other library automated systems and prior experience in an academic library and/or library technical services department is highly desirable.</p>
<p>Duties include coordinating serials management for all three libraries plus the Career Resource Center, and processing and shelving journals at the main library. This position coordinates and shares responsibility for interlibrary borrowing and lending. Additional duties include physically processing new library materials, managing quarterly course reserve materials, searching titles in the library’s automated system and other online databases, and maintaining statistical collection data and generating reports.</p>
<p>The successful candidate will be able to independently manage a variety of time-sensitive duties and interact effectively with a diverse constituency of university staff and faculty members.</p>

<p><span id="more-2324"></span><strong>Responsibilities</strong></p>
<p>Open, sort, file, distribute and process library mail.  Work with vendors and filing service on missing items.  Maintain routing and desk copy lists (adding and subtracting people as needed) to ensure accurate ordering.</p>
<p>Respond to requests from attorneys and staff about the contents of the library and locating particular volumes, and making copies of requested materials.</p>
<p>Prepare MCLE materials for use by attorneys including uploading licensed materials to Intranet, library catalog and other locations.  Assist in coordination of MCLE seminars.</p>
<p>Contact local libraries, government agencies and other entities to locate information from external sources.  Maintain and update ILL database.</p>
<p>Contribute to the maintenance of library records, catalogs, indexes, etc. including printing labels, creating circulation records and deleting old records.</p>
<p><strong>Experience</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Knowledge of library systems.  Law library experience a plus.  Ability to communicate with calm, courtesy and tact with co-workers, attorneys, supervisors, vendors and others</li>
<li>Detail oriented</li>

<p>Under the general supervision of the Head of Technical Services, the Periodicals Manager performs a variety of technical, clerical, and public service duties. The primary responsibility for this position is the management of  the Library’s periodicals: maintaining the physical magazine and newspaper collections, providing accurate recordkeeping in the online catalog, and overseeing the annual subscriptions. Other duties will include both technical and public service:</p>
<ul>
<li>Assistance 		to Library Acquisition and Cataloging staff</li>
<li>Circulation 		desk coverage</li>
<li>Assistance 		to Library members with online catalog, computers, printing, 		copying</li>
</ul>
<h3>Qualifications:</h3>
<ul>
<li>Minimum of 		three years experience using Millennium serials module to establish 		and maintain records for serials holdings</li>
<li>Experience 		with both public and technical service library practices, including 		circulation procedures</li>
<li>Ability to 		establish and maintain effective and cooperative working 		relationships with library staff, library users, and vendors</li>
<li>Excellent 		oral and written communication skills</li>

<h3>SUMMARY</h3>
<p>The Library Assistant I will support the Learning Commons facility, a library/learning center that facilitates educational and informational professional development of its users by providing a wide variety of electronic, multimedia, and print-based learning resources. The Library Assistant I reports to the Library Commons Manager.  This position begins on May 26, 2010, and ends on August 28, 2010.  The Learning Commons is open to members of Exploratorium teacher professional development programs, Exploratorium staff and other affiliated audiences.</p>
<h3>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</h3>
<p>* Staffing of circulation desk Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm<br />
* Circulation: Check materials in and out<br />
* Maintenance of collection: Filing/Shelving<br />
* Keep the Learning Commons neat and tidy<br />
* Initial response to reference inquiries in absence of regular Learning Commons personnel</p>
<h3>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</h3>
<p>* English proficiency required<br />
* Punctuality<br />
* Ability to work with minimum supervision<br />
* Experience with circulation and reference in a library setting<br />
* Good interpersonal skills and positive customer service attitude<br />
* Ability to perform detail work with accuracy<br />
* Willingness to be flexible under a variety of circumstances. (Sense of humor a plus)<br />
* Ability to learn quickly new procedures<br />
* Perform duties in a timely fashion<br />
* Honest, reliable, flexible and self-motivated</p>

<p><strong>Requirements for this position are one of the following</strong>:  2+ years of college and some library work experience in circulation tasks; or a Library Technician’s certificate; or enrollment in a community college library tech program or in a library science program; or 1 year of Library work experience, preferably with circulation.</p>
<p><strong>Minimum Qualifications</strong>:  English proficiency.  Reliability. Attention to detail and ability to perform detailed work with accuracy.  Ability to learn new procedures/software quickly. Ability to perform duties in a timely manner. Excellent interpersonal skills and positive customer service attitude. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.</p>
<p><span id="more-548"></span></p>
<p><strong>Desired</strong>:   Strong computer skills (such as Microsoft Word and general office software, experience with databases, internet searching); accurate typing; demonstrated attention to detail in past work experience; ability to handle repetitive work with good humor. Experience working in library technical services (including WorldCat, Docline) and/or with an automated library system. Interest in and experience with the field of psychology or Jungian psychology would be helpful.</p>
<p><strong>Essential responsibilities of this position include</strong>:  managing circulation of materials, including reserves and overdues; checking in and processing journals; interlibrary loan processing; keeping detailed records and statistics; preparing books for cataloging; ordering books and supplies; inventory; perform physical tasks such as shelving books (including standing on step ladder to shelve) and lifting and packing boxes.</p>
<p>The successful candidate will be a self-starter and be able to work with a minimum of supervision, and possess a friendly and energetic manner and good organizational skills.  They will be able to perform detailed work with accuracy, to prioritize tasks, and to work well with patrons and as a team member.</p>
